Person Centered Psychotherapy with Patrick Akrivos

The Person-Centered Approach was developed by the American Psychologist, Dr Carl Rogers. It takes a positive optimistic view of human nature and is a growth.
A growth model assumes that people have within themselves vast resources for self-understanding and for altering their self-concepts, underlying attitudes, and self-directing behavior. The task of the psychotherapist is to facilitate this growth which is achieved by offering a non-judgmental, supportive & valuing environment where clients can feel free to truly be themselves and live the experience of being not judged, but truly seen, heard and empathetically understood.

In our sessions you can expect a safe and respectful atmosphere, free of fear. I meet you with openness, genuine interest, empathy, warmth and respect. In feeling accepted as you are, you are invited to speak freely about whatever matters to you. Together we explore what is important to you and what you are experiencing. We look at what has brought you to where you are now and how everything is interconnected. Step by step, deeper understanding emerges, and along the way you discover your own unique solutions to your challenges. I accompany you in developing in a way that truly reflects who you are.

To ensure that the process fits as well as possible into your daily life, l offer a combination of online sessions, which you can attend from anywhere, and in person meetings at my practice in Vienna and Athens. Online-only therapy is also available.

MEN'S GROUP

Men’s Group Psychotherapy with Patrick Akrivos

For generations, men have grown up with the belief that they must be strong: not show emotions, solve all problems on their own, and certainly never admit.
Nowadays we must aim to break this wall and encourage men to share their feelings and emotions. This process begins in a “safe place” called a Men’s group, a place where men are given the opportunity to speak openly about their issues and feelings, to allow their vulnerable sides to be seen, and to grow with and through one another.

My men’s group offers a safe space for anyone who wishes to engage with themselves and the challenges of their lives. Free from rigid ideas of what it means to be a man, members share their worries and fears, topics and emotions, frustrations and wounds, as well as their successes, plans, and passions. They support one another with empathy and shared insight. In this way, each participant can experience the relief of realizing that they are not alone in finding life difficult at times. New ways of seeing oneself as a man and relating to life begin to emerge.

COUPLES THERAPY

Couples Therapy with Patrick Akrivos

The foundation of my approach to couples therapy lies in emotion theory and attachment theory. Both emphasize the transformative power of emotions: our feelings reveal our true needs. When a couple is able to understand these needs on a deeper level, the often rigid patterns of attack and defense can begin to dissolve.
Are you there for me when I need you? Can I rely on you? Will you stand by me no matter what happens? These existential questions underlie most conflicts—even when the surface-level argument seems to be about something else. In couples therapy, we look beyond these triggers. I support you in identifying the entrenched cycles of disappointment, blame, hurt, and withdrawal, and in learning how to interrupt them in moments of conflict.

Together, we explore the deeper needs that each of you brings into the relationship and how you can respond to one another in ways that truly meet those needs. Often, the love and connection that have been worn down by the struggles of everyday life can be rediscovered and experienced anew.

CHILD & YOUTH PSYCHOTHERAPY

Child & Youth Psychotherapy with Patrick Akrivos

Young people today face a wide range of challenges: stress with parents, pressure at school, first relationships, shifting friendships, social media, identity questions, and even broader concerns such as climate change. Finding one’s place in the world can feel overwhelming, often showing up as anxiety, anger, self-harm or low energy.
I offer a space where you are met in full attention, without judgment or pressure to change. In our sessions you can be exactly as you feel, while we explore your thoughts, emotions and questions together.

Many young people struggle with low self-esteem, family difficulties, school-related stress or intense emotions that need to be expressed before they can be understood. I aim to create a safe, non-threatening environment where talking becomes possible and meaningful. Together we navigate the challenges of everyday life and develop your own ways of coping, growing and discovering who you are, supporting you in building resilience and a stronger sense of self.

With younger children, I work through person-centered play therapy, recognizing that play is a child’s natural language. In a carefully held safe and accepting space, children express themselves through play, creativity and imagination rather than words alone. I follow the child’s lead with empathy and presence, allowing their inner world to unfold at its own pace. In this way, children can process emotions, build confidence and develop a sense of security and trust-growing in a way that feels natural and true to who they are.
